Why is RAAC considered a safety risk?

Unfortunately, RAAC’s (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) lightweight properties came at the cost of its structural strength. RAAC does not perform in the same way as traditional reinforced concrete, being significantly more prone to deflection. Due to its porous nature, reinforced steel is more vulnerable to corrosion and, as such, a protective coating of latex cement or bitumen is needed.
